バーターハウス２０年は、ディアジオが創めたオーファン・バレル・プロジェクトとしてリリースされた中の一つ（“オーファン”とは“親のいない子”、“孤児”の意）。
このプロジェクトは、熟成庫で忘れさられている１０年〜それ以上熟成のバーボン樽原酒を限定でリリースするというもの。
バーターハウス２０年は、ケンタッキー州ルイ・ヴィルのStilzel-Weller蒸留所のウェアハウスで発見されたと言われています。
Stilzel-Weller蒸留所は、ジュリアン・“パピー”・ヴァン・ウィンクルによって設立された有名な蒸留所でしたが、数回持ち主が変わった後に１９９０年代初期に閉鎖。
ボトリングは、テネシーのジョージ・ディッケル蒸留所で行われました。

The first in the "Orphan Barrel Project" series planned by Diageo. Orphan is a word that means "orphans without parents", and the concept is to release high-quality, long-aged unblended whiskey buried in warehouses to the world. Barterhouse 20 Years Old was discovered in the warehouse of Stitzelwella Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky and bottled at George Dickel Distillery in Tennessee. The Stitzelwella Distillery is now closed and the warehouse inventory is owned by the Bernheim Distillery. Distillation itself was completed in 1991, and the content is presumed to be the original whiskey from the Bernheim distillery.
